Why we need to learn again to look for the positives, not be engulfed by negativity
Especially in those days of constant uncertainty, negativity is all around. The minute when we wake up and read the first piece of news in the morning, it is all about threats, crisis and negativity around us. It would be easy for many of us to be anxious, get depressed and be constantly on edge by the overwhelming fears. However, fear is poison, it blocks out creativity as well as out day to day happiness and positivity. The key in not getting overwhelmed by negativity is therefore to not get overwhelmed by our own fears. The good news – we can work on our mindset from within to achieve this.
Most of us think that the media or events around us are responsible for negative thoughts many of us have at the moment and frustration. However, the real core of the matter here is our own fear of consequences that impact our lives that very often are just in our head. Fear therefore has the opportunity to overwhelm us, make us anxious and lets us forget all the positivity around us.
Let me provide an example. Many of us are currently preparing for Christmas and travelling to their loved ones. With uncertain times and fast changes around us, people are extremely anxious if they make it home for Christmas. We can get overwhelmed by the fear of travel bans being reintroduced and new restrictions. But if we take ourselves out of this situation for a second, what is the worst that can happen? If we really don’t make it home for Christmas, we will be able to see our family likely in January some time. It is of course not desirable but is it really that bad? Many of us have friends and relatives where they live, and it might not be the normal Christmas we know but certainly also not a bad one. To put ourselves into that “worst case” scenario for a moment, can help us calm down.
To see the positives more in our lives, we therefore have to change out mindset from within. Only when we change our outlook and take us out of the situation of the panic mood, can we maintain inner balance and be happy even in uncertain and challenging times. It is vital to take mental breaks from the negativity and madness around us to see the small and positive things around us happening every day.
Every time governments decide on things we cannot do anymore, there are thousands however that we still can do. Let us orientate on that and suddenly we have a lot to look forward to in our lives. We waisted so much energy on fear and anxiety, energy we should spend on facing on the positives. It will give us inner calm, will open our horizon for new things and will eventually lead to a happier life than many of us will ever experience.
It is vital in current times that we take conscious time for positive moments, be it with family or friends, it is important to have those moment, to cherish them and to be able to use them as positivity stacks for when things might seem tough again. I often think about great moments this summer, when I could travel, see friends and spend time with family, I know those times will come back and I focus on those rather than the dooms days of the media. Think positive and things will seem much better, as they are not always as bad as the fears we make up in our heads. Once we understand that, that life is an up or down, we more consciously see life in a positive way and we should as there is a lot to look forward to.
